Ervandashat
Conceptual Vision for a Future Territory
Commissioned as an early vision for a large-scale development in Armenia, Ervandashat imagines a year-round territory combining living, agriculture, tourism, culture, entertainment and adventure.
BDB developed the programmes, architectural concepts and visual atmosphere for a family of unusual, transformable structures integrated with the landscape. The concepts were accepted as part of the architectural vision guiding the project’s subsequent development.

Concept and creative direction for live events, pop-ups, exhibitions and interactive installations: using space, sequence, movement and interaction to shape how a story is experienced.

Using research and experimentation to develop concepts for new behaviours, objects and environments.

How I Work
Tools can make production faster. They cannot decide what is worth making, what problem actually needs to be solved, or what should remain unchanged.
Complex projects rarely involve a single design problem. They bring together stakeholders, information, constraints, environments and decisions that affect one another.
The challenge is not simply to find an idea, but to understand the project’s structure: what matters, how its parts relate, and how decisions in one area affect another.
FSM — Form & Structure Method — is the framework I use to organise this process. It does not prescribe a visual style. It makes design decisions easier to explain and evaluate: first understand the structure of the problem, then give that structure an appropriate form, and finally check whether the result still serves its purpose.
Structure
Understand the context, stakeholders, hierarchy, constraints and relationships that shape the project.
Form
Translate that structure into an appropriate visual, spatial or communication system.
Alignment
Check that each part of the system still serves the project’s purpose as the work develops.

Direction & Responsibility
Complex projects are made by many people. Architects, designers, developers, researchers, curators, producers and other specialists may all contribute. The director’s role is not to replace those disciplines, but to give them a common direction.
As director, I remain responsible for that direction as the project moves from concept through development and implementation.
This means staying involved where important decisions are made, interpreted or changed.

Set the project’s central idea, priorities and creative principles.
System Development
Establish the principles and decision criteria that allow different disciplines to develop their work without losing the central direction.
Team Direction
Give specialists a clear basis for developing their part of the project while keeping it connected to the whole.
Review & Alignment
Review work as it develops, resolve inconsistencies and keep key decisions aligned with the project’s purpose.
Client & Partner Dialogue
Explain decisions, work through competing requirements and maintain a shared understanding of the project’s direction.

GreenInvest
Brand Identity / Creative Direction
From agricultural perception
to a managed investment system.
Perception shift
From nature and agriculture to the architecture of a managed asset.
Context
GreenInvest works with agricultural land, but the project is not a farm brand. It is a repeatable investment system built on management, structure and long-term growth. Its earlier visual language communicated nature more clearly than control.
BDB decision
BDB preserved the land as the material foundation and made the management system visible. Surface, geometry, scheme and architecture became four layers of one visual language.
System evidence
Surface — the physical reality of land and orchards.
Geometry — the organisation and rhythm of cultivation.
Scheme — coordinates, markers and control points.
Architecture — the complete system of managed growth.

Background
Vahan Balasanyan is an Armenian designer, creative director, educator and researcher based in Yerevan.
Trained in architecture and graphic design, he has more than two decades of experience in design practice, education and research.
He holds a Ph.D. in Architecture, teaches design, heads the Student Research Laboratory at the European University of Armenia, and has worked in art direction, public-sector projects and international academic programmes.
